At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
