Crew Member Shares Depression Following Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The group of women also featured leaders in different industries.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
